What is International Kabaddi?

International Kabaddi Rules

About

The sport of Kabaddi originated from south Asia and was mainly played by villagers aiming to keep fit. However the sport became competitive for the first time when it was included in the Asian Games in 1990, and has been in every edition since.

Most recently in 2014 Kabaddi undertook an IPL style franchise and created the so called ProKabaddi League with huge success. In the year 2015 it was the second most aired sport in India behind only cricket!

The ProKabaddi league features teams from cities across India including Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru to name but a few. They have homegrown players as well as international players from countries such as Iran and South Korea.

In 2016 we saw a revived version of the Kabaddi World Cup after two previous editions in 2004 and 2007. The 2016 Kabaddi World Cup saw 12 countries compete from all 5 continents, including the likes of USA, Australia, England and Kenya.

About

Until recently rectangular kabaddi has not been widely seen in the UK, with only a simple version of the game being played in Hindu communities and in groups of Asian backgrounds.

Recently over the past few years university students decided to form Kabaddi clubs in their respective universities and this provided the catalyst to growing the sport and learning the proper rules of the game.

There are now clubs at 5 universities including University of Birmingham, Kings College London, London School of Economics, Oxford University and Imperial College London. All the clubs have both women’s teams and men’s teams.

Outside of University, there is a Birmingham team and a London team, and then there is the England Kabaddi team. The England Kabaddi team was properly formed in 2013 and recently took part in the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup with players from London School of Economics and Imperial College London.

England came fourth in their group beating Australia and Argentina but losing to India, South Korea and Bangladesh.

About

After inaugurating the league back in 2014, the sport took India by storm recording the second most views of any sport in India behind only cricket. Since then there have been 5 seasons with the most recent season taking place from July 2017 until October 2017. This renewed excitement around the sport caused a revival in the Kabaddi World Cup which was hosted in Autumn 2016. This was broadcast across the world including on Sky Sports in the UK and on Fox Sports in the USA.

Kabaddi continues to grow across the world particularly in Asia where we’ve seen Korean and Iranian players take part in the ProKabaddi league. With players also from Kenya, Poland and England taking part in previous editions Kabaddi is sure to keep on growing. Recent figures have suggested that ProKabaddi Season 5 will be the most watched sport in India overtaking cricket. Now with 12 teams in the league and the Women’s Kabaddi Challenge taking place in season 3 the IKF (International Kabaddi Federation) have built a foundation upon which to carry the game further.
